I had the pleasure to present in two sessions at this years annual IMISCOE conference in Barcelona, which welcomed over 650 participants. First, in a semi-plenary organized by Jorgen Carling on Managing relationships in research on Mediterranean migration with the amazing Aysen Ustubici and Celine Cantat. Thanks so much to Jorgen for organizing this great discussion about the relationships with funders, between academic partners, with governments, and the ethics of doing research with refugees and other migrants. This was a great time to reflect on the challenges and realities of doing research!
Second, I co-organized a fantastic panel with Daniela De Bono on Deconstructing the Border and reception of asylum seekers in Italy. This panel included presentations by Vanessa Grotti, Valeria Bello, Simon McMahon and myself. As a group our presentations showed the challenges and wide variations in experiences of refugees and other migrants in coming to Italy and within the reception system. For more on Italy, Daniela and I are organizing a larger workshop at the Malmo Conference in October.
