On 14-15 December, I had the pleasure to work with ICMPD and deliver a training on irregular and transit migration to the Government Authority on Migration in Kosovo funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation under the MIMAK Kosovo project. This was a fantastic group, knowledgeable in migration issues and grappling with several challenges in irregular migration of emigrants and return.
The training concluded with developing a roadmap for improving irregular migration policy in Kosovo. The training included an understanding of the types of irregular migration, rights of irregular migrants, policies to manage irregular migration and their effectiveness, and the role of information campaigns in managing irregular emigration. In fact, Kosovo had a large information campaign targeted to prevent irregular emigration in 2014, which clearly did not deter the 2015 emigration flows known as the ‘Kosovo exodus’. It was great to learn more about this country and region in these trainings.
